took a bird for a ride

Yesterday doing about 50-60 mph a morning dove flew in from the side of the road and hit me in the spotlight area and did not bounce off. I rolled off the throttle and the bird flapped around in the area for a few seconds and then was forced into the pocket bounded by my lower triple clamp, headlight bracket and fork tube. This startled me because with all the flapping around and feathers flying off, I thought it was going to wind up in my face. It finally found a sitting position and rode with me for about a mile, gasping for breath, before it fell out. I've had bird strikes before, but never one that became a riding companion! I don't like morning doves, but I had to feel sorry for this critter.

I like Morning Doves, to watch or to eat, I have to feel sorry for you. Kind of scary but a good story none the less.

Here ya go Sparky - a baby and its parent. A pair nested on my window sill in 2005. I do agree the adults are attractive. The reason I don't like them, is that in a place I once lived they gathered on the roof outside my bedroom window, too early every morning and coo'd non-stop.

I had a mourning dove use my planter attached to the deck for her nest this spring. She hatched two babies and it was fun to watch the progression right from the window and even from outside on the deck. It's amazing how fast they grew once they were born.
