When is a "cruiser" a "standard"?

Some motorcycles that usually get lumped together with "cruisers" in discussion forums, and in the marketing of the companies that make them, are actually "standards" in my opinion. As evidence I submit two examples, the Victory V92SC (drawing by our own Dan Lane) and the HD Sportster. As I see it, a standard has footpegs positioned directly or nearly directly under the the driver seat, regular handlebars and risers (not pullback or sport style)..the combination encouraging upright ergonomics, the body pieces are two fenders, a tank, and side panels, and they have normal wheels (not narrow front or wide rear).

So are these bikes really "standards" or "cruisers"? If they are standards, then why are they so often called cruisers?

Steve
