Fall Colors Run - 2017

I'm looking to put together the 2018 Fall Colors Run. Normally, we do it up to Copper Harbor, MI in early October. That's still a completely viable option.

Another option we were looking into was to go up the Gunflint Trail. Unfortunately this is a more heavily booked area. MamaT DID find a resort that has a number of available cabins which accommodate between 4-14. Prices look to be between 30-90 per person, depending on amenities and occupancy. Camping is also available.

The downside is that the resort is about 2 miles of gravel road off of the Gunflint.

So, if you are even thinking about the Fall Colors run, please chime in your thoughts!

And we really need to get this decided on soon. Things will book up pretty fast. I'm willing to do the leg work, but feedback is needed.

Count us in for both 2017 & 2018

I'm fine with Northern MN, change is good and 2 miles of dirt is cool, it'll be worth it

A couple of thoughts . I'm very familiar with this area as my family and I have hunted it for as long as I can remember , so just my two cents . 1 dates , 2 theirs the public campgrounds in Grand Marquis with showers and a pool and 3 if you want to do a cheeper alternative there is a very nice gravel pit just a couple of blocks off of the gunflint that's free with no reservations required . Just a couple of thoughts .

Thanks for the ideas, Greg. I don't know how many people would want to camp, though. Some, I'm sure. But most opt for the comfort of real beds and walls, especially late Sept and Early Oct, when this run takes place. But, it is worth putting out there. The cost of the cabins at Hungry Jacks runs between $30 - $90 per person, depending on the cabin. The average is $45.

How many people would prefer camping over hotels or cabins?

The dates would be Sept 30th for Grand Marais and Oct 7th for Copper Harbor, depending on which we decide to do.

I vote September 30 Grand Marias. The lodge and cabins look great!

As you know Iím ALL for camping but riding this late in the year I think making hotel reservations is the way to go.

Another thing to keep in mind is that this will be around a 400 mile day of riding and who want to setup a tent after riding 400 miles??

If we go with the Gunflint area, then the route would include Hwy 1 and a lunch stop in Ely before we travel up the North Shore. If you've never been on Hwy 1, it's an awesome road. With the fall colors, it should be spectacular. A definite rival to Hwy 41 in Michigan.

All the lead scattered around your gravel bed may explain a few things.

We would love to commit to this ride but we don't know exactly when Barb will be getting her new hip.
