Lake Superior Circle

JSpudz and I will be doing the Lake Superior Circle tour next month. Planning to not plan much of anything. Winging it and find camping spots and maybe a motel if required. I assume there are plenty of places to camp?

I camped at Canada's National Parks on the northern side. Be careful in MN, the campgrounds are all reservation only now unless you do private campgrounds. Used Michigan State park in Kewanee peninsula tip. Have fun. I personally rerouted the Circle Tour map after riding the Grand Marais Truck Trail (miles and miles of soft sand). It is not longer included.

We had a great time on this trip, stopped and saw a lot of stuff on the way. It's a great motorcycle trip, even better than I expected. Lucked out with great weather, camped every night. Jumped off a boat dock into Superior at the bottom tip of Sleeping Giant peninsula in Canada, it was cold as hell. Swam on the south shore for about 5 minutes at Herbster, WI the water was warmer but not toasty. Plenty of camping is available all the way around the lake. Returned home with 2400 miles on the clock. Highly recommend stopping at "The Log Slide" west of Grand Marais, MI for the view from the top of the sand dune which slopes 500 feet down to the water.

Question,

Why did you turn off of Trans Canadian 17 at that hugs the east side of the lake at Wawa and go farther east onto 129?

Glad you had fun and good weather!

We had allowed plenty of time and wanted to add more miles. Turned east to see "unexplored territory" that most people won't see. Also the Lake Superior loop route map advertises Hwy 129 north of Thessalon as Ontario's "Tail of the Dragon". We found that the last 40 miles of that route just north of Thessalon follows tight to the river and is a very nice hilly and curvy road, the other 100 miles has nice mountain scenery but is not super curvy. Overall it does not stack up to Tail of the Dragon curvy road standards, but that whole stretch has surprisingly big mountains.

Not convinced we made the right tradeoff, we compensated by riding north from Sault St Marie to Batchawana Bay to cover some of the Superior shoreline that we skipped over. It's kind of a coin toss.

One thing we found out on that Hwy 129 loop was make sure to go 5 miles out of your way and gas up at Chapleau, which is 88 miles into your tank east of Wawa, and after Chapleau we found no gas for the next 156 miles.
