Hit a dog last week

Last Thursday the wife and I were heading down Indian Trail in Afton with about 40 or so bikes from the Neumann's ride. We were right in the middle of the pack going about 40 when this short stocky chocolate lab bounces out of the buckthorn. Locked up the brakes and wham, tire dead center on his abdomen, his head caught the engine guard and I could see him in the mirror spinning down the road behind me, the bikes locked up 10 deep fishtailing and swerving, fortunately nobody else hit him and nobody hit each other. The the Vic stayed upright like a champ with no damage to the bike. So we stop, a group of the guys went to aid the dog, the wife ran up to the house and got the owner. The poor things back was broken. The owner was very apologetic and was more concerned about our safety then the dog. That was helpful. So we loaded the dog up in her car and she drove off.

His name was Whiskey, about 13 years old, a known car chaser and has been hit before. Poor guy. RIP.

Good to hear that all riders made it. Good for the owner to understand how bad it could have been.

VERY GLAD you and the Mrs are OK after that. Hitting a full-grown male labrador is almost as bad as hitting a deer!

I'm sure you two feel bad about Whiskey, but at 13 years he was just about at then end of his years.

That dog has chased after me a few times over the years.

Glad your alright TBird.

Another case of:
hit brakes and slow as much as possbile.

Square up and hit it straight and square. (dog, deer, turkey, etc...)

Stay in control.

Thanks for the concern you guys and I know everyone here understands. Larry, it will take more than that to keep me from riding. Dispite Wiskey's misfortune I'll be riding with you guys as often as I can. I was impressed how everyone is so easy going and easy to talk to. I do realize that the Thursday night rides are short, fast and to the next bar. But regardles, it is a lot of fun.

Glad everyone is ok, it could have been much worse.

The Dog has been hit before and is known to chase cars? What is wrong with the owners of this dog?

I really hate pet owners that put there animals in danger and risk your life at the same time, they should be arrested for neglect, endangerment and attempted manslaughter!!

Glad to hear you're alright. It's unfortunate that dog had to suffer/die because that owner was irresponsible. If this was something new for the dog, that'd be one thing. But to say he/she's a known car chaser and still allow them to roam free is too irresponsible.

Glad to hear all worked out ok for all the bikes! Good driving for everyone to stay up and no collisions etc on a ride with a lot of bikes. Sucks about the dog, shame on the owner (assuming he didn't really care about him getting out), that's just sad.
