I just want to say - this is what the Utopia also known as the TCVR is all about - what a cool event.

Thanks Thumper for planning it!

Wish we could make it.

Brian also contacted me on the FB TCVR page and will be sleeping on the couch in the Elk Cabin.

The futon is still available and sleeps two.

Did anybody book the Moose yet? If no, putting it out there that the wife (Janna) and I are interested in going if any other people will commit to going in on the cabin with us.

Moose has not been booked yet, but it is still on reserve for another week-or-so.

From the FB post, it sounds like there are at least 3 more people who are interested but not hooked up with sleeping accommodations, yet.

Glad to hear that you and Janna are interested in coming up!

Wayne has a futon in the Elk cabin or I have a pull-out in the Caribou cabin.

GPS Routes? Bah!
  • The plan is Forest Lake to Ely, with a gas stop in Independence.
  • Depending on time and weather, we may take 37/135/21 into Ely.
  • From Ely, we will take 1 down to Finland. Depending on time and weather, there may be a stop at the Palisade Head overlook, otherwise we will take 6 to 61.
  • North on 61 to Grand Marais, then Northwest on the Gunflint.
  • If time and weather permit, we can run all the way North to Trails End, then come back down the same way.
  • Then North on Co 65 to the Lodge, dinner, bar and bonfire.

If we miss Trails End or Palisade Head on the way up, we will hit it on the way down. I was planning on taking MN 23 down from Superior.

The route is open for discussion. My main goal is to get the group into the lodge safely by Sunset, which will be 6:45pm that day.

Can we take a different route. Maybe come in from the west. And then hook into the gunflint trail.
