Steel Frame Rear Shock

I'm thinking of replacing the rear shock on my Vegas.

The OEM runs about $300 and the original did well by me for 100k miles.

I see that Witchdoctor carries the:
Progressive 465 - $480
Penske - $750

What do you guys think?

I put the Progressive shock on my Kingpin and I thought it was a big improvement both in compression and rebound. Has adjustable preload, too.

Lots of low mile used ones on eBay. Well, lower than the 100K on your existing one. As cheap as $40. But this one looks pretty good.

I have not heard of the steel frame shocks being re-buildable. The old Fox shocks on the first generation bikes could, but I don't think the Vegas/KP, etc. version from '03 onward can.

I have heard people using both shocks and the only complaints have been about the cost on the Penske. Other than that, I have never read anything about testing done side by side.

You may want to give Jon and Witchdoctors a call, he likely has some good info on the differences between the two.

You are welcome to try my KP if you think you could learn anything from that. I'm used to it now but when it first went on I could notice a significant improvement, mainly that the rebound coming out of a dip was softer, less apt to toss you out of the seat. But right now we need another rain, Bloomington slimed all sidestreets with that slurry crap before last Friday's snow apocalypse that never happened.

Hey Dean. I would like to try out your Kingpin with the Progressive, even though we are a few lbs different in weights. Haha

And I'm pretty sure Joe's right about the shocks not being commonly re-buildable, although I think that would be my preferred option
