tire beads "don't work"
This ought to stir up some opinions. At the IMS bike show I asked the guys at No-Mar tire changer display about using tire beads for balancing. (I asked because I've never tried them and I do not understand why they should work as it seems to me they would only make the imbalance worse).
Their reply was "They don't work". And they void your tire warranty. When you remove your tire after using beads, the black pieces you see are pieces of tire rubber scoured away by the beads. And the bead location is different every time you start moving. Racers have never used beads, that should tell you something." |
It's really hard to say. In theory, it kind of makes sense from a physics point of view, but my other brain thinks it's complete BS.
Having said that, I have dyna beads in the rear tire of my '05KP. Didn't get a wobble of any sort, and never felt anything less than stable. As another interesting data point - twice the weights have fallen off my XC wheels, both front and back (there isn't a really good "flat" place to put them). I haven't noticed any difference at all, including on a 135MPH run on race track road on the way to the Caterpillar Run. Last, all Hammers and Jackpots have run without weights on the rear wheel since the beginning of time - the majority of MC balance machines can't manage a wheel that wide. So basically, I gave you no help in answering your question, but gave some anecdotal stories to ponder. |
I think it really depends on what kind of oil you use.

The red ones were always faster, surely there is no doubt about that. (especially the #'ed bikes)

I've run with and without and can't tell a difference at at any speed.
Never noticed a difference in wear either. Not on the SC, Hammer, or MG. We'll find out with the BMW soon. |
