Heat-shrink on Right Control Wires

Just wondering if anyone has any experience or advice with replacing the heat-shrink cover over the front brake light switch connection. I need to replace the switch . . . it isn't closing the circuit any more.

I don't know if I can take the starter/hazard switch cube apart to get the wires out and thread the wires through a new heat-shrink, get a sleeve big enough to slip over the multi-pin connector (in the headlight), or if I just need to improvise something else.

Thouhts? :BeatsMe:

The way they do it at the factory is to use a large diameter piece of hs tube and slide it over the conector that goes inside the headlight. It will be a very tight fit over the connector, they prob put it on befor the connector. The switches are all soldered on so you're not going that way.

I found that the HS tube is actually listed in the parts catalog; 1" diameter by 2-1/2".

If I can't get it over the plug in the headlight, I'll see what I can do to pull the wire plug-ends out of the connector . . . and make sure I put them back into the right slot when I put it back together!!

The real killer (no pun intended) is the price on the micro-switch . . . $45.43!! :Horror:

Not sure if ya wanna go this route or not, but have you tried the liquid tape stuff? I used it under the rear fender on the Kingpin when I replaced my turn signals. Seemed to set up nice, and I like waterproof in that situation.

I'm not familiar with liquid tape . . .

I guess it would depend on how it looks, since this is right out there on the handlebar.

If you wanted to try to add some bling and cost isn't a huge factor, you could try some Chrome braided sleeving. The 1/2" sleeving is like a buck fifty/foot. I think it might be cool to do. Would kind of go well with the braided Barnett cables.

Right now my headlight goes off when I turn right and back on when I turn left, depending on how much I have to do to fix that, I may try some myself.

You can get chrome, black, or colored split loom too, but that isn't really cheap either. And it isn't exactly great to look at.

I think kit's talking about Liquid Electical Tape. Normally black, it paints on over wires or cable. Brush it on a splice or connector and it dries out to a smooth, flexible and water-proof finish. Available at most any hardware or auto parts store for roughly 5 bucks or less.

If you don't like the look, you could peel it off after its dry and try again, and again, and again... :-)

Honestly, you might want to practice with it first and see how good a finish you can get... it's really more function than form.

Part of the problem is that it is going over the plug connector between the brake light switch and the wiring harness. I'm not sure if liquid tape would work for that. That would probably be a hard one to get to look right anyway.

The discussion is all moot at this point anyway . . . I got the heat-shrink "part" from Vic . . . listed as 1" ID x 2.5" long but was actually more like 1.5" ID, and fit over the plug with lots of room to spare. I'd guess that it would have fit just fine if it was only the 1" ID listed.
