View Full Version : 3rd Annual Caterpillar Run 2003 - DISCUSSION
sks700
01-26-2003, 09:30 AM
After some discussion on the topic, I have added the Caterpillar Run to the calender for the weekend of June 14-15. We need to decide if we would like to use one of the routes that we have used in the past, or try out some new roads (hwy.38 comes to mind). If we do ride a new route, do we want to make sure that a stop at Magnum's is included? I really like stopping there but by-passing it would give us a lot more flexibility in route selection.
For some of the newer riders:
The past 2 years we have taken a ride through northern Minnesota with the final destination to be my house/cabin/hunting shack in Big Falls (not far from International Falls). We spend Saturday night there after a good evening of eats, drinks, and general socializing.
This has been a very fun and well attended event in the past and we hope that it will continue to grow year after year. It has been mainly Victory riders, but is not limited to bike brand and I invite everyone that would like to come along.
Let's start a little chatter on this topic.

We're ready and up for whatever route we take!! This is one of the rides I look forward to the most each year. I like making the stop at Magnum's as well, but if we decide not to that's OK. I think the main reason in the beginning was to meet up with Jim and Bobbi, but now that they're down here in the "concrete hell" I guess that reason no longer exists. Here's to hoping we have a dry ride home this year!

PS...just remembered I have a few pics from last year in Vicpic. Just browse user albums and click on Swiffer, then select 2002 caterp-run.

It's on my calendar. I have not ridden 38 yet. Like Charlie's Bar too. Saw a beauty sitting at the bar there. There was a beast there too I recall.

I think I am going to make it this year. I put it down in the calender.
Kinda fun starting to plan rides already!

Was wondering if we could start getting a head count for the ride, and maybe route ideas, that way if there is quite a bit of us, we may want to plan food stops and give those places some warning. Just a thought.

It would be fun to go up on38 north of grand rapids to big fork, probably one of the most scenic routes we can ride in the state. Got the date down, looking forward to it. Jim
ps-i'll try not to scrape floor boards this year!

Bringing this one back up top as well. Hopefully we'll have quite a "convoy" heading up this year. I have an uncle in Brainerd who sounds like he wants to meet up with us this year...just bought a used Vulcan 1500 late last fall after many years of not riding.

Bug:o Good idea, but "head count" would be easier to track as a separate thread. Lets keep this thread for route discussion, when and where to depart, and other talk. I'll make a special "head count" thread and pin it so it's always at the top.

it would be a nice ride up highway 38 as it runs right through my old hometown Effie. Went to school in Bigfork. made alot of runs to Grand Rapids over the years. After all, it was the closest big town-- drive-in theather, A&W, and shopping mall. it is alot bigger now. I will keep watching the board to make connections with the club and meet the crew!!!!

I am also leaning toward the hwy 38 route. Probably make it a little shorter ride than last year. 169 to Garrison, 6 to Grand Rapids, 38 to Effie, (?) back over to 6, 6 to Big Falls. We could maybe run at least part of 65 back down on Sunday.

For what it's worth, count my vote for 6 & 38! Just be sure to take a nap and wait for us in Big Fork if we pull the trailer;) . I wonder how well it'll handle the twisties...at say 70?

As most of you already know, the last two years we have stopped at a cafe in Garrison for breakfast. It already looks like we will be having a larger group this year (I love it), so I'm wondering if it would be easier to stop at the casino instead? They would have room for a larger group and they have bike parking right up front. We could probably even call them ahead of time and let them know we are coming and they could set an area aside for us.
What do you all think?

I'm curious Lee, roughly how far is it up there, and about how long does it take? I'm really hoping to make it, but I have my daughter graduating, as well as a niece, so I've got some grad parties going on that month.

Sounds like a "whiz-bang" idea to me Lee...plus it's kind of hard to miss the Casino for those meeting us there.

It is about 200-250 miles from Elk River using the 169/6/38 route. Driving time is about 4 hours or so. We will actually get to Big Falls quicker this way than we have in the past, so we will have more time for socializing than pervious years. If some people can't or don't want to make a weekend out of it, we have had riders go part way and then turn and come back.

Our cabin up there sleeps quite a few people "dormatory style" ...Several people in each room. You will probably want to bring some pajamas or sweats or something..unless you are an exhibitionist!?! There is also room in the yard for tents/campers. A few people went that route last year. We also have a camping trailer parked up there that will sleep a few. There is also a bunk house that will be cleaned up and set-up to sleep several more. I assume by the number of returning riders that nobody has had any problems with the sleeping arrangements yet. There is one motel in town if someone is not comfortable with these accomodations. They only have a few rooms and not sure on the prices. I will get a phone number and post it for any that are interested.
I hope that we get enough people that we run out of space. (if it looks like there will be a problem, I will deal with it then)
Any past riders feel free to comment on this subject as well. Were there any problems that I am not aware of?
One more request: so that I can plan sleeping spaces, when you respond in the headcount thread, will you please indicate if you will need a bed or if you will be camping?
Thanks,
Lee

I agree on the returning riders telling the story.
As far as problems. I think that there could be a better way to furnish the food for the evening meal. In past years, Lee has provided the meat and cooked it, with some help. Some of us drove into town to buy stuff to go with but this can be so hit and miss. I will make a suggestion here and look for feed back.
How about Lee or his father-in-law pick up what ever is needed and we divide the cost and each person chip in that amount to the kitty. That way we get what is needed.
Any alcohol, you are on your own to buy that yourself.
What do you guys say to this???

I have heard of some interest from Victory riders in our area in the Caterpillar run. I don't know for sure but they have been asking me for details. I have posted the flyer for TCVR. I hope they log in and post their intentions. I think they would like to meet in Grand Rapids or Deer River and ride north. I think they would ride full circle and ride home, but I will leave that up to them. I plan to camp at the cabin and get to know the rest of the crew.

I am having patchs made for this year's ride. I will post a pic of the sample in VicPics under SKS700 Patch album. This is a stiching sample only---the colors will be different, green caterpillar with white(ish) lettering. I am looking for an idea of how many I should get made. Please look at the picture and tell me if you would be interested in getting one. They will be $10 each.
Thanks,

Lee - I haven't seen the picture, but count me in for a patch. Splitting the cost of the food is also a good idea. Now tell me, this isn't going to be one of those sexist groups where the girls get stuck doing the dishes, is it? I always hated Thanksgiving and Christmas at an ex-boyfriend's where the men watched football and the women cooked and cleaned. (Hey, I like football too!) Thankfully I never married into THAT family. Just kidding about the sexist thing, by the way. So far everyone I've met (mainly First Thursdays at Dulano's Pizza) seems pretty darn nice. One more question: anyone coming from the south metro? It would be nice to hook up with another rider down this way. Lee - are we meeting in Elk River or Garrison?

Since the route is going to be shorter this year, we could meet an hour later, giving those that have a ways to ga little more time. What does everyone think?

My lil sis and her man would like to make the ride (she is registered here) (khill) They haven't told me for sure but they would hook up in Garrison if they come. OBTW they ride Harleys. Ok, I finally got the info on the motel in Big Falls. If anybody would be more comfortable going that route. It is approximately 6 blocks or so from our place up there, so it would be a real short putt (or even walk) after the evening festivities. They have 2 rooms with 2 double beds that go for $41.95 a night for 2 people. They also have a 4 bedroom suite, complete with kitchen for $100.00 a night for 4 people. This one has 1 double in each bedroom. The phone number is (218)276-2025.
Please let me know if you decide to make reservations there so I can plan sleeping room at the house accordingly.

I drove the route last Friday and planned out some stops. Here is the plan and approximate timing for those that will join us along the way.
8:30 be gassed-up and ready to leave Zylstra H-D. There is a station right next door so you can fill up there.
first stop will be Grand Casino Mille Lacs (approx. 65 miles) for breakfast (Arrive 9:30-9:45)
I figure about an hour for this stop.
We will continue north on 169 to Garrison, then take 18 over to Hwy 6
11:30? or so we will stop in Outing for gas and a break (about 55 miles)
again north on 6 to 2. east to Cohasset to county 62. north on 62 to 233, then east to 38.
We will stop at Jackpine Junction for a break (this leg is about 50 miles)
Then through the twisties and hills of hwy 38. We will stop in Marcell and the Frontier to let the group re-gather and get some ice cream and gas (we won't need it yet, but it will save us a stop later). This leg is only about 20 miles, but we may get split-up due to traffic and each riders comfort level ( PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO RIDE PAST YOUR COMFORT LEVEL!!)
From here, continue north on 38. Jim has a route in mind to get us over to Deer Lake Charlie's for a BS session and we will go from there to Big Falls when ever we are ready.
I am really gettin excited about this ride!

I am really looking forward to this ride! On my NEW ride! I'm picking up my new Victory on Saturday (trading in my '99). It's a Sonic Blue & Champagne Touring Cruiser with a lot of extras plus I'm adding a Stage 1 kit. Randy and I went to Baraboo, WI on Memorial Weekend and my clutch cable went out about 200 miles into the trip on Saturday. Low and behold, Randy and bought an extra one when he replaced the original that went out 1-1/2 years ago. PLUS he had brought it with. The man is a psychic. (Or is that a psycho??) Luckily I had shifted into neutral (figuring it was going...) and we were close to a park when it happened. I think between that, the tranny slipping out from third more frequently and the not-so-nice gear pattern I was ready to buy a new bike. I know this is a little long-winded, but I'm EXCITED!

Spent part of the rainy day yesterday loc-titing all the small nuts & bolts on the trailer so I don't lose any tail-lights or anything this year:) . I had forgotten all about that stuff working loose last year 'till I did a good once over getting ready for this w/e, and noticed I only have 1/2 of the tail-light mounting screws left. Hehehe...oh well, gave me something to do. Getting the fuel pump recall done today, bringing Michael to "Pop-pop's place tomorrow, heading to Brainerd Friday to pack up for Saturday. Those of you unsure if you want to go on this trip...pack the bike and ride along!! This is the trip I look forward to the most each year(maybe some other folks too). Jim, a stop by your place would be fine by me. We don't really have a set schedule, and we will be covering less miles then last year, so we will have plenty of time. As far as what thread something goes in, it's our forum, we can do as we like:p

JimBob i have seen your bike with tent, bags and 2 chairs so help me out here---lol. maybe i need a taller back rest to tie stuff one??????????. not real sure about a trailer but will check that out this weekend.

Lee,
We're having one hell of a time trying to figure out our logistics for this weekend. Can someone give me a shot of intelligence/decisiveness?? :gun:
There, that's better.
TX Charger,
What's the number for the Evergreen Road? I know it changes numbers at Kinn's road. I just always knew it as the Evergreen.
That's your territory, us Bigfork guys can't memorize crap!!
Anyway, after leaving Bigfork, as you head towards Effie on 38, there are two main highways that split off. These are the only two highways taking off from 38 in the 7 mile stretch to Effie. The first is less than a mile out of Bigfork and heads west. This is Hwy. 14, and leads to Hwy. 6. The second is a mile or so farther down the road ( right after a sweeping left hand corner) that exits to the right. This is the Evergreen Road. Long straight stretches, long sweeping corners, nice sky vistas. It empties out at Hwy. 1 about 2 miles east of Effie. Take a right and you're less than 10 minutes from Deer Lake Charlies.
Upon leaving DLC's, It's a nice putt back west down 1 to Effie. There is also a nice roadside stop at the Bigfork River. Usually there is a portable toilet stationed there.

Perks,
This is a sidebar to the discussion...
but what style of music do you play? Would you be comfortable on an old Epiphone accoustic?
Jim
(it's missing on button on the tuners (low E), but I always bring a pliers along when playing it.)

Jim, i don't remember the number on the evergreen road but i thought by Kinn's it was gravel. on the tar it should come out on hiway 1 about part way to DLC's.

TX,
That's the wild thing about the Evergreen....It's one number at 38 and a different number where it ends at 1. That's because Kinn's part was never tarred, but is actually the same number as the first part of the road (38 side). From Kinn's (or Bello north, etc.) to 1 is a separate road although it seems like it should be the same since it's all tar.

Lee,
I will not be able to make it this weekend. I have weddings and parties associated with such events for the next month. I surely wish I could make though, it does sound like a lot of fun.
Are you still planning on running up to Jere's one day?

I FELL IN LOVE WITH AN EPIPHONE GREEN SUNBURST 12 STRING 35 YEARS AGO. AFRIEND OF MINE OWNED IT BUT HE LET ME PLAYIT NOW AND THEN. I HAVE A SIGMA (KOREAN MADE MARTIN) AND DON'T GET TO PLAY IT MUCH ANY MORE CUZ MY FINGERS WON'T LET ME DO MORE THAN ABOUT 20 MINUTES. BUT IT MIGHT BE FUN TO STRUM ALONG. THAT IS ABOUT ALL I DO ANYWAY.

Perks (hope you don't mind that I shortened up your name),
That would put that Epiphone into the late sixties when Gibson (good old U.S.A.) was still producing them in Kalamazoo, Mich.
In other words, great guitars.
Sigmas are nice guitars too. I have a friend who owns one and it sounds boomy like a D-18 Martin.
I plan on bringing up a couple of guitars...and if the mood suggests that bringing them out would be fun, and with Lee's blessing ( as our host and originator of the Caterpillar Run), it would be entertaining to do some old tunes.
I still don't know what key Sparky's kazoo is tuned in...

You're lucky Sparky....
I just happen to have one of those odd-key kazoos.
Here's Bobbi and my plan...we're heading north Friday night as soon as I get off work ( which is...who knows??). This gives us the opportunity to spend the night at the ranch and get re-acquainted with the woods.
For the chance to be together, we're leaving the Vic in town and heading north with our car. Yes, Yes, I know..
We want to catch up with everyone, So we'll be out and about when we figure you'll be coming through.
Saying that, we'll either see you at Deer Lake or in the afternoon at Lee's.
I talked with Bob tonight ( owner of Richie's Marcell Inn) and he is expecting me to jam with Ross
Saturday night. So our plan is to hang out for most of the afternoon and then head back to Richie's in the evening.
Also, Bigfork is having a big street celebration on Saturday. Floats, displays, beer gardens, booths, etc.
whomever has a cell phone....mine will be on during the weekend.
