View Full Version : Cycle World Show

The Cycle World Motorcycle Show (I guess it's officially the International Motorcycle Show) will be January 24-26, 4pm-9pm (Friday), 10am-9pm (Saturday), and 10am-5pm (Sunday) at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

This has been mentioned before, but the dicussion was tabled until the event came a little closer, and it's probably time to see if we're all going to meet up somewhere at a specific time. I know that I have to begin working on my schedule a bit earlier than most, as life gets crazy each and every week.

So, I hereby move that we open the discussion. I've managed to miss "the group" for the past 2 years, so those of you who made it, what were the particulars in the past, and do you want to do that again?

Let the messaging begin...

P.S. I've added the dates and times of the show into the nifty calendar that's here on the site that so few of us use on a regular basis. Let's make more use out of that calendar this year!

I usually hit the show early both Saturday and Sunday, so I'm pretty open. What does everybody think, meet around noon or something on Saturday?:bounce:

Last year we met up for dinner and a BS session on friday night. Then Saturday morning we met for breakfast and then to the show. I thought that I remembered Don and Linda posting something about when they would be in town and where they are staying (same as last year?), but I couldn't find it. As there will be several members coming in from out of town (Don, Linda, Randy, Eric, Tom?, Jim & Bobbi (are they from out of town now, or not)), It may be best to see when and where they will be coming/ staying first.

So, will everybody that is planning on coming in from out of town please give us a rough idea of your plans? Then we can go from there.

Thanks,

Lee

:gunrev: that would be a good time to sell some of us a t-shirt or sweatshirt i've been reading about in other posts if anyone has some made up:crazy:

I only have one XL white t-shirt available from our last order. If anything, we could set up a game plan for making a new shirt, having embroidery done, or whatever.

If Dan Lane comes, he can bring some of his pins (by the way, someone STOLE one off of the flyer we've got at Warners! I put two on the top, just for looks!)

One other note...we have business cards here that you can print out on business card paper for potential TCVR participants ("member" really isn't a good word, since there are no dues or officers or official structure, and we intend it to stay that way).

I put in a recent entry on that former message so that it is here in the front of the messages, in case anyone wants to print cards or flyers before the motorcycle show.

Like Lee said...I'll be doing the same as last year. Coming down Friday and heading to the show on Saturday. Any times work for me...as you all know I'm just a bum with no schedule.

Haven't talked to Don lately to see if he's heading down or not. If he does I'll probally hitch a ride...then we'll be on whatever schedule he needs.

Anybody have any suggestions for a meeting place for Friday night dinner and bull session? I found an old e-mail from Don & Linda saying that they would be coming down friday afternoon/ early evening. The place that we meet should be able to seat a group of 15 or so. and would be good if we could get a few cocktails there also. We already have a babysitter lined up for the evening and plan on making a night of it. It would be great to get a good size group together. Make sure that you bring your wives and/or girlfriends (but not both).:p

If you like BBQ, Market BBQ over on Nicollett Ave (between 14th & 15th Sts) has a lot of room. I believe they have drinks available, and their BBQ is almost as good as mine. (No brag, just fact:p )

P.S. Lee, I think Market has enough room to bring both Wife and Mistress ;-)

Sounds like we may have to have a summer get together over at your house so we can put it to the test!

Not a problem, if you don't mind the construction of Greenvale Ave. Can't make a blinkin' cookie but ahhhh, give me meat!

What about parking there.

Last year we went to Ruby Tuesday near where the out of town folks were staying. Could do that again too.

But Market might be the best as we have folks in Northfield, Cottage Grove, Plymouth and Elk River and Market would be central for all.

They have a lot with the entrance off of 15th St. It's not huge, but as being in the 'downtown' district, their never is a lot of parking. Maybe something out on 394 would work better???

How about either Grandma's or JP Mulligan's? They are both right off of 55 and 494, it should be easy for everybody to find. What about a time 6:00? 7:00?

Also, if you are thinking about trying to make it to this gathering, please post so we can get an idea how many people we need to seat. I'm not sure if either of these places take reservations, but if we let them know that a good size group is coming maybe they can help us out.

Okay I say this is happening too slow and time is running out. Lee, just name the place and time and who can make it will and who can not will not. I like the idea of the Market BBQ place Saturday after the show. We will all be close. I will be where ever you say.

But we have to think in the future about getting a meeting spot more central to places like Elk River, Savage, Northfield, Cottage Grove, Stillwater and Brooklyn Park.

Okay then, I have made arrangements for 10-15 people at Jake's Sports Cafe (used to be JP Mulligan's) for 6:30 Friday night. Hopefully we will get at least that many showing up. It's a pretty casual place and the food is reasonable ($8-12), and those who would like can get a few cocktails. It's on the northwest corner of 55 and 494.

See you all there,

Lee

All,
Is there a time that all of you guys are meeting at the Victory Booth Saturday? I don't think I will make the Friday dinner but would still like to meet you(s) that day. Also, what do you guys think of name tags with our User names along with our real names. I remeber last year to meeting a few of you and not know who the hell was who until they said their user name. But, I do get confused easily....

Hope to see you all there

Supper was super. The food was great. The company was out standing. Lee and his wife, Sid and his wife, Kit and his wife, Jim and his wife, Don C. with Randy, Pete and his kin, Don V. and myself.

The plan was to meet at the "Victory" booth at 11:30 for pictures and to put faces with the names. Looking forward to meeting some new faces and exchanging stories with some old.

Jim was down at the show already and reported a line of folks wanting to sit on the new Vegas. Getting great response.

We had a good time tonight ...thanks to all that showed up. Tomorrow we will meet for breakfast at the Denny's on the SE corner of 55 and 494 at about 9:00 if you can make it. We will try to be at the Victory booth at the show at about 11:30 or so if you would like to meet up there.

Looking forward to meeting those that I haven't had the opportunity yet,

Looks like today isn't going to work, they needed help selling tickets for raffle today for the Girls Hockey Association. When your wife is a board member, it kinda limits the way to say no :( But with any luck, I'll make it Sunday, will miss the chance to meet everybody, but then thats my luck, day late and a dollar short. HAVE FUN EVERYBODY!

Man it was GOOD to see everybody today! It's getting to be so many, it's hard to get a chance to talk to everyone! Sorry Hil and I left Market BBQ so quickly, I just wanted to leave before it got too dark as I don't know my way around downtown. I could just see us driving around all night in a big circle trying to find the friggin freeway:rolleyes: . Lee, thanks for the stuff. I think the picture you took is the best I've had taken in many years! Hil and I are gonna pop in Easy Rider and dream of warmer weather now:cool: .

Was great to see all the gang there... We had a pretty good turn-out! The Victory booth was getting a lot more serious shoppers than the HD booth. I drooled over the lovelys, er, Vegas, that is...

Dang cold weather... Ya know, all I can say is that I think winter makes us appreciate riding a lot more than those who can ride all year round..

ING and Teri, it was good to meet up with you two also. I hope we can all do some riding together this upcoming season.

Sort of disappointing to hear that there isn't going to be a Spirit Lake ride in `03.. I think that is a mistake.

So - ya see Sparky & Tuba - Thumper is a REAL person! The Warden (my lovely bride of 26 years "Darlene") is really looking forward to riding with us too..

Well, I gotta hit the showers and the hay.

I though the show was a good one, had only one problem with it. I really wanted to pick up a heated jacket liner, and Gerbing was there. No show specials though.

Sorry I missed out on dinner, had a surprise birthday party to get back to and ran out of time.

As I discussed at the show, I was a bit disappointed with the overall IMS this year. I enjoyed the Victory area (although I'd say that the Honda Valkyrie Rune was getting far more attention than the Vegas) and meeting up with all of you Victory riders, but at the same time, I was a bit bummed by the fact that the other exhibitors (i.e. not cycle manufacturers) had such little variety of items to offer. I can usually find something to buy when I'm there...this year, I only paid for the ticket, parking, and dinner at Market BBQ.

As I told people at the show, I'm going to go ahead with the embroidery designs, and I'll let you know when they are up and running.

Big-Foot
01-28-2003, 08:35 AM
I gotta admit that I spent my fair share of time looking over the Valkyrie Rune too.. It's one of those lovem or hatem bikes that just really intrigues ol' Thumper...

On the show itself, I guess it was pretty good. I was pretty disappointed in the Convention Center and the narrow isle's that they setup. Getting through some of the displays was just nuts.. I was disappointed that Mustang was not there selling seats. That would have been the one thing I bought there! Corbin was there but had no brochures and no one was really interested in talking with me about a seat for a 99 Victory. :(

I was amazed at all the "Plastic Scooters" (Vespas?) that everyone is coming out with.. I guess its got two wheels it qualifies... The prices on some of the Custom Bikes there were insane.. You'd think that Jesse James' name was on all of them!

Victory is earning it's place in the world, but its taking a little longer than I expected. The longer they have a presence, the bigger the market will be. I think a lot of people are still sitting back and taking a "Lets see" attitude since the failure of Excelsior Henderson and the floundering of Indian to define it's new place in the market.

BATMAN
01-28-2003, 06:05 PM
I think Victory did the right thing bringing out the Vegas. Next I think they REALLY need a full dresser, if they really want to compete with the others.

That, and more accessories for the current models.

jimbob92c

Bobbi and I made it to the show on Sunday. The Vegas was getting a lot of attention....lots of H-D shirts looking it over. It does look better in person than in the pictures, and it sits nice ( for us inseam-impaired folk). I like it better with the custom wheels than the spokes too.
Lots of folks sitting on the other Vic models, in fact it seemed that the Victory booth was generating as much interest as the Harley presentation. We went over and looked at the Harleys....you have to admit that the silver Road King with the whitewalls is a real beauty. Lots of grey beards sitting on the touring models while we were there.
This show didn't seem to have as much to offer as previous years. I didn't like the narrow aisles either....people were crammed everywhere we went.
I was looking for the magazine booths ( Motorcycle Cruiser, Rider, etc.) but didn't locate any. Are we starting to see the decline of our sport?
Maybe I missed it, but I was looking for the Royal Enfield area....always an interesting bike to look at. And didn't there seem to be a lot more ATVs at this show?
The Honda Rune. to me, looks like a futuristic bike that has suffered a collision with a wall. Those forks looked like they've been bent back to the frame. Odd suspension setup. I think if Victory had put the Vegas on a similar revolving pedestal, it would have generated as many onlookers as the Rune seemed to be attracting. Presentation, presentation, presentation!
Otherwise, I can't wait for riding weather. Storing the bike for the winter is like bidding farewell to an old friend. We haven't been out riding since November and going to the show really put the 'itch' back in us.
Well...that's it for now...
stay warm and wish for warm weather,
Jim
