View Full Version : A Simple Oil Change!
Maybe Thumper or one of you guys can help me out (no offense Lil). After the wonderful ride on Saturday, Sunday meant work your butt off. The more enjoyable part was going to be "perform scheduled maintenance on bike" ie an oil change. I've done this before so no big deal. Got a motorcycle jack and everything. After draining the oil, pulling the old filter, replacing with a new filter, and putting in 6 quarts of pure liquid Victory Gold, I was ready to go. Now it goes south boys. The oil lamp won't go out??? It'll flicker and dim from time to time but it won't go out. Could it be a bad filter? Did the oil pump suddenly decide to take a dump on me? I'm going to have to give a call to H&M tomorrow and get some garage time unless someone has an idea of what my problem might be. I'll be checking messages tonight and tomorrow if anyone can help. Thanks in advance.

I see that lite problem when I wash the bike (sometimes) and have seen it once on an oil change but it was early spring and after looking at my oil you could tell it had a little water in it by the frothy look of the oil. Turned out it was condensation that wet up the oil. Have you checked the oil to see what it looks like? How about a paper towel or napkin on the oil sensor nub, and on the slidy thingy that goes over it (doncha just luv that techno talk). That is the extent of my thinkin, but you wanna take caution following my leads, ya never know where yore endin up :p Good luck and hope its cheap!

Kit, I'm with Mike on this. The only time I see the oil light on is after a bath(not me, the bike:D ). You said you put 6 quarts in...usually it only takes 5 1/2 due to the oil cooler retaining some of the old oil. I wonder if the light would come on if it's over full? This is a different one for sure. I'd be surprised if your pump went bad and am uncertain if a bad filter would cause the problem. Does the bike sound OK while running? You'd think it would make some god-awful racket if you didn't have pressure. Good luck and be sure to let us know what you discover.

Well guys, thanks for the input. Your help is always appreciated. Last night, after I got home from work, and while I was trying to decide how I would trailer the bike and get her down to the shop, I gave it one last try. She fired right up, the oil light flickered and dimmed like before, but this time I ran my hand along the sensor wire. I couldn't find anything loose, but lo'-and-behold (boom-boom) out goes the light. I can only assume that the jack, positioned where it was, loosened a connection somewhere. Now when I turn on the key, the idiot light burns bright as can be and as soon as I touch the starter button, out she goes. Been workin' ever since. Wouldn't have even thought to go there if you guys hadn't put your idea's out there for me to consider. Sometimes, you get your mind going down one path and just don't see the other ways (can't see the forest for the trees kinda thing). Thanks again....The brain trust works!
