After a rough summer on the bike (1 crash, 2 low speed tip overs), I'd been experiencing a steady "squeak" from the bike. Don and I had talked about this earlier in the summer, but after 5000+ miles of the thing squeaking (and a couple of visits to different dealers, one to Warner's when the back tire was replaced, and one in Rapid City, SD on the Sturgis trip), I'd finally had enough, and brought it back to Warner's.
It was also time to have all of the insurance crash work done, since all the parts but the replacement front fender tip were in.
Well, to make a long story short, Tom (the mechanic at Warner's, for those of you who don't know the dealership) called with "bad" news. Apparently my front sprocket was going for the 2nd time (seems to be in intervals of 15,000+ miles for me), and now the main drive spline was so stripped that the transmission needs replacement.
Darn! Why did I buy that +4 year extended warranty?!? Why do I go to the best dealer in the Twin Cities?!? What's wrong with me?!? Why can't I pay for the replacement of the transmission?!?
SO, to make a long story short, "CHOIR" is going to get a 2003 transmission when they come out, which means that I'm out for most of the remainder of the riding season. At the same time, the bike will be getting hotter cams (at the suggestion of Tom), new D&D drags, Champion Bags, a new freeway bar, Kuryakyn pegs, and driving lights (most of the latter parts are due to the crash, and I decided to upgrade from the Nationals to the Champions). So, at 31K+, my bike will come back re-born with new gear ratios and more power and better sound. It's just too bad that I won't likely get much riding time this year...both with school in session and waiting on the 2003 transmission packages. Warner's as you know, is VERY speedy in its service, so that's not the issue.
So, as you ride your proud mounts, gentlemen and ladies, please put on an extra 100 miles here and there for me. This is the first season in a while that I'll have only put 10K+ on a bike in a summer (I'd usually get another 2-5K during the months of September and October), but I'll be seeing you in the Spring.
