View Full Version : Out for the season

After a rough summer on the bike (1 crash, 2 low speed tip overs), I'd been experiencing a steady "squeak" from the bike. Don and I had talked about this earlier in the summer, but after 5000+ miles of the thing squeaking (and a couple of visits to different dealers, one to Warner's when the back tire was replaced, and one in Rapid City, SD on the Sturgis trip), I'd finally had enough, and brought it back to Warner's.

It was also time to have all of the insurance crash work done, since all the parts but the replacement front fender tip were in.

Well, to make a long story short, Tom (the mechanic at Warner's, for those of you who don't know the dealership) called with "bad" news. Apparently my front sprocket was going for the 2nd time (seems to be in intervals of 15,000+ miles for me), and now the main drive spline was so stripped that the transmission needs replacement.

Darn! Why did I buy that +4 year extended warranty?!? Why do I go to the best dealer in the Twin Cities?!? What's wrong with me?!? Why can't I pay for the replacement of the transmission?!?

SO, to make a long story short, "CHOIR" is going to get a 2003 transmission when they come out, which means that I'm out for most of the remainder of the riding season. At the same time, the bike will be getting hotter cams (at the suggestion of Tom), new D&D drags, Champion Bags, a new freeway bar, Kuryakyn pegs, and driving lights (most of the latter parts are due to the crash, and I decided to upgrade from the Nationals to the Champions). So, at 31K+, my bike will come back re-born with new gear ratios and more power and better sound. It's just too bad that I won't likely get much riding time this year...both with school in session and waiting on the 2003 transmission packages. Warner's as you know, is VERY speedy in its service, so that's not the issue.

So, as you ride your proud mounts, gentlemen and ladies, please put on an extra 100 miles here and there for me. This is the first season in a while that I'll have only put 10K+ on a bike in a summer (I'd usually get another 2-5K during the months of September and October), but I'll be seeing you in the Spring.

Chris

You will love the cam and tranny combo; not a lot more speed, but the ability to pull in the lower rpm range is much improved. It also stopped my back firing problem (2000).
Unless they do not have all the parts, you should be back on the road soon. The service I received was quick; inspite of the troubles that were going on at the time.
Is the 03 tranny different than the 02?

Chris,

I agree with Tom - you will love the combo.

Tom - the 2003 tranny is supposed to have an overdriven 5th gear (according to Tom at Warners)..

If you decide to unload your National Bags, let me know - I may be interested!! :)

The folks at Warners did a Super job on my bike - BigFoot. I do need to bring him back to get the clutch-arm re-positioned and adjusted, but other than that he rides like a completely new and different bike! Tom had the whole scooter torn apart to replace the Frame, lower triple-tree, right fork tube and, of course, the 2002 Tranny.

Warners is also stocking the new BigFoot S1 Chips - you might want to have one put in and see what you think of the performance. :bounce:

Chris, you may get it back sooner than you think...I've been waiting for the tranny too, and last I heard from Tom is they're supposed to ship August 30th. I hope this is still true, I've ridden Bigfoot with the '02 tranny and cannot believe the difference! All I can think about now while in first, second and popping out of third is how nice Thumpers bike felt. Did he happen to mention any different dates for their arrival to you? When you mention "out for the season" you have me extremely worried now. We all know too well how often Victory is late(or never;) ) when making new products available.

Steve,

You may have heard differently, or perhaps sooner than I. When I dropped off the bike on Tuesday (saw you there), Tom called that night and said that Polaris wasn't shipping for a while yet, at least 3 weeks.

They stopped sending out 2002 transmissions earlier this summer. Tom, yours may have been one of the last installed!

I know I'm going to love the new transmission, and we'll see what happens. I know the service will be quick once the parts are shipped...thank goodness they come somewhat local (perhaps from Osceola?)

The bummer is that there will be no way for me to join you on the Sept. 7th ride.

Thumper, the National Bags are going to my insurance company and are crash-damaged.

I'm going to stop in at Warner's on Wednesday. I want to get a picture of my bike all apart. It's nice to know that they would be willing to accomodate me for the trip, but after putting my bike down three times this season, I'm retisent to use one of theirs, even if offered! I don't think I can guarantee that I'll keep it upright.

Say, Lil'V, my problems occur AT slow speeds, all 3 times this summer (hadn't been down literally since 1997, and that was a low-speed tipover in Hastings, and then in 1996 when a car pegged me driving through 2 spaces in a church parking lot!). So, if i were to ride, I'd want to keep the speed up, not down!

So, on the side, anyone that hasn't become a statistic yet can feel free to adopt one of my "crashes" instead of earning one yourself. I can even make a certificate of an "adopted crash."
