Hi all,
I know it's been a long time since I've posted. Lots of 'stuff' going on as of late....
Big news first....it looks like the northern couple are to become a cities couple. Bobbi has accepted a job in the metro area and we are currently sifting through housing options.....something that we haven't had to deal with in over a quarter century.
I'll be sticking with my job through the transition but hope to be settled by winter. No...we're NOT selling OR renting our homestead up here...it's our retirement home. This is quite an adjustment for a feller from the woods.....!
So does that mean that I can go on more rides with the TCVR group? :D

In other news, I brought my Vic in for its checkup last Saturday. It would appear that I have multiple problems going on. It's been stuttering and balking at around the 2200 rpm mark...plus lots of backfiring. There is a fine line of oil appearing between the heads and jugs too. It's starting to jump out of first on acceleration and landing in neutral....plus do the "rolling dogs" engagement between 2nd and 3rd.
I called Keith at Magnum yesterday and he was greatly concerned about the clutch. He didn't like how it engaged (the very, very end of the clutch handle play) and the noise that the clutch housing made. This bike has done this from the get-go. I'm probably just used to it.....but Keith says that something is wrong.
My concern is that I changed to Mobil 1 V-Twin oil 2200 miles ago and it might screw up my warranty.....even though the bike has been doing these things for the past few years (when I used Vic oil). I had to work overtime tonight and Keith left a message to call...he was tearing the primary off today...and I'm a bit worried.
I was quoted $2,200 for a new tranny if I chose to change it out to the new version. I would love to have it...AND the new torque compensator. I suppose the trans would really have to lunch in order to be qualified to receive a warranty conversion.
Anyway...the bike has been a bugger to low speed cruise with and I hope I get it ironed out. I'll let you know what transpires.

So there you have it.....the Jimbobs are ready to invade the cities!
Pictures at Eleven!

Get the 2003 transmission if you have to pay the price. Keep us posted and call me.

Jim, glad to hear you two will be down here! Keith will get your bike taken care of I'm sure...the tranny should be a warranty thing though.

Jim,
I switched to Mobil 1 myself, and the tranny has never acted better. If anything, the Mobil 1 has made your transmission last longer. The extended warranty should cover everything that you spoke of. I too have been having some problems with the "legs" of #434. I was re-assured that I am getting a replcement this winter under warranty as I do NOT feel safe on it. I have false neutral's between gears, it popping out of neutral into first or second when idleing, and not switching gears when I shift. These instances have happened when going around clover-leafs and in passing instances. (where I have been close to laying it down not to mention filling may pants)
That was reason enough for my mech to do a replacement. If the insurance company doesn't find anything to warant a replacement, he assured me he will. The problems you speak of are obvious and there is NO reason it should't be a warranty situation.

I spoke with Keith today and he found my clutch problem.....the basket wasn't torqued down (loose nut...so to speak) and the clutch could jump a little causing the groaning noise I was experiencing.
My stuttering/balking condition has been determined to be the potentiometer on the throttle body, which will be replaced.
The tranny is being looked into. So far, all of my previous observations about Magnum Sports and Keith are justified. He will go to bat for you and get to the root of the problem. A very honest and competent dealer.
I'll report more later....

Hey Ritt, where do you get your Mobil 1 around here?

Jim, it's nice to have you down here, or coarse we'll have to vote you in! (Bobbie, however, is very welcome)

Batman,
I got it at Auto-Zone in Hastings. Wal-mart also carries it, but it was all out when I went there. Next stop was Auto-Zone and they had it for the same price, so that is where I will always buy it, nice guys too.
I was shocked after the switch. As soon as #434 fired up, I knew something was different half of the rattles are gone, and now I can really lug the motor into the 1500 RPM range and it doesn't sound like the hammers banging together....

BigFoot is going into Warner's to get his new 2002 tranny next week. :bounce:

I'm not looking forward to being able to lug it as much as I am looking
forward to using 3rd gear without clenching my teeth! :gun:

Hey Ritt..

You're using Automotive Mobil-1, not Mobil-1 V-twin right?

I have not seen Mobil-1 V-twin anywhere!

Other than here:

http://www.mobil1.com/motorcycle/index.jsp

that is...

They have a search function for a retailer near you. They claim it is Checker Auto Parts. A call to Checker gets a high-school drop-out that just says "Huh? - Yeah we gots mobil 1, but it's `spensive..." When I clarify that I want the motorcycle oil, he tells me "Oh they aint come out wit dat yet..."... <sigh>

Well, I don't suppose someone who makes less in an hour than the quart of oil costs is going to be an absolute Super-STAR in the Customer Service category...

Damnit Thumper,
I hate to say it....but....you are right once again. It was not V-Twin scooter oil. It was....shoot I forgot, what weight....I'll have to look, but da tranny still sounds better.
I will have the pleasure of a new tranny next spring...
and it is kinda 'spensive

I have found one spot that sells Mobil 1 V-Twin oil, somewhere up by Rosedale shopping center. I found it in the phone book. They also told me Delano's HD has it. VERY $$ though, something like $7.00 quart.
