A couple of weeks ago, Sparky_Bill mentioned that Chad at Warner's had cleaned out his K&N Air Filter. I stopped down at Warner's today (ask Dean about his new slogan, by the way...he got me pretty good with that one) and picked up my new Mustang tank strap, so I figured, "Heck, I'll get a K&N cleaning kit, too."
I don't know when the K&N went in, but cleanings are suggested every 50K-100K according to the box. My bike has 52K on it, and the K&N probably didn't go in there until 5K or 10K...so it's been a while.
Let me just say that I'm amazed the bike was able to breathe at all. The filter was totall junked up on the side it's supposed to be junked up on...and I was amazed at the bugs that had embedded themselves in the CREASES of the filter. So, a good scrubbing, application of the K&N cleaner, waiting a while, backwards rinsing...then holding it up to the light...realizing there were more bugs in the creases...scrubbing some more...applying the K&N cleaning fluid...then back washing...
Eventually I had a visibly clean filter. I let it dry, applied the oil (with a dye in it), waited a half hour, reapplied some more oil, and reinstalled.
I'm about to go on a little ride now (11pm) so I'll see how she handles. I imagine it will be a good ride.
So...to all of you with K&Ns...take the time to check the filter. It's an $11 kit that will last at least 2 cleanings.
