What is the charge if you are caught with Expired plates on your motorcycle? I feel the urge to ride!

Go for it! The satisfaction of riding will far out weigh the cost if you're caught.

I can pay $$, but I can't live with them taking it away.

I think it's about a $50 ticket. Take your plate off, and put a "license applied for" sign in it's place. Especially effective if you have one from a dealer.

Joe, how about if you buy them on line and print your receipt to carry with you, and then your tabs will come in the mail. It doesn't take very long.

Not a problem they just call in and verify the current tab has been issued.
BTDT almost every year.

You know you can renew tabs online, right?
http://dutchelm.dps.state.mn.us/dvsinfo/mainframepublic.asp
Just pay your $20 (And the service fee), bring your receipt with you until the tabs arrive.

Our system at work find letter below I wrote to the state.
I drove to Apple Valley to renew my tabs on plate number "VICTOY" and was
asked if I drove it last year. I said yes, she then told me that I did not
have tabs for last year. I told her I thought I did. I came home and
checked and I had a 05 sticker on it. I checked the web site and it says
that I do not have current tabs. It says the last tabs I bought were
3/17/2003.
I did not understand and called the DMV on Friday but after talking to
someone and giving her the number off the sticker, she put me on hold for
much longer than I could hold, since I was on break only. I hung up hoping
that she would find the mistake and fix it. I just check the web and it is
still wrong.

Plate Payment Credited On Exp Yr Reg Tax
VICTOY 3/17/2003 04 $10.00
The 05 sticker I have on the plate is XXXXXXXXX. Could you correct the
record as soon as possible so I can purchase the 06 sticker. Better yet,
for all the hassle, just send me the sticker for free.
I did not hear back for a few days so I sent the same letter again with the following first line. This is the second time I sent this. I need to take my bike in for service and I need tabs to do that. I need this matter cleared up. Not hearing again, I searched for the head of the department's e-mail and the second letter again, this time with this being the first line: Patricia, I am really ticked now!!! Below find the letter I sent to motor.vehicles@state.mn.us twice now. I sent this at 9:45PM
I received a reply from her before 10PM that night. Below is her letter:
Mr. T :
I am forwarding your request to Larry Ollila, the Vehicle Services Program Director, for his staff to research and reply to you as you requested. I apologize for the service you received and will be notifying the supervisor of the poor service you received.
You should be receiving a response to your request tomorrow.
Patricia McCormack, Director
Driver and Vehicle Services
The following day I got a phone call from a DMV staff member saying he had my file and the mistake was corrected and how sorry he is about it. He was wiling to sent the tab out and I could send a check to him when I got it. I told him I would rather pick it up at the Apple Valley place as I needed to take the bike in for service which would have been nice to do the day before. He said he would call ahead and have it all ready. He did, when I arrived the papers were all printed out and all I did was hand the woman a check. She was kind of amused that the state had called and set it up with her like that.
The very next day I get a response to the first 2 e-mails I had sent.
The woman wrote the following: Thank you for contacting Driver and Vehicle Services,
I have updated the record to reflect your 2005 stickers. You may renew at any time.
Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Sincerely,
Ann #18
I wrote her back this:
Dear Ann #18, this matter was taken care of two days ago by your bosses, Patricia McCormack, Director, Larry Ollila, the Vehicle Services Program Director, and a fellow by the name of Dan who called me yesterday to tell me it was taken care of and I could get my 06 stickers which I did Thursday. Thanks for writing to tell me you updated the record today.
Bill
PS I hope you did not change the record from my having paid the 06 stickers now, to only having paid the 05 ones so I can do this all over again next year.
She wrote back:
Thank you for contacting Driver and Vehicle Services,
I passed your record along to my supervisor for the correction. I was told the correction had been made and to notify you of this.
It is still not corrected. It does not reflect I paid for the 06 tabs. When I bought the 06 tabs it was updated and she rolled it back to the 05. I have not had time to address it with the head of the department yet.

Sparky, you are going to be on a first name basis with these folks!
Maybe they should just give you a lifetime sticker and be done with it!

I agree John, that is a hard one to believe. I think I might play with Ann #18 a bit before I get serious but if a cop stops me now and runs the plate it will come up NOT paid and then he will think I have someone elses tab on there. More hassle so I guess I better get on her tonight.

Bill,
For the time being, until you get the database straightened out, print off those emails and the web page, and carry them with you!
Any officer will see what you've been through and give you a pass, assuming you're respectful enough and not reeking of liquor or something stupid.

I know how that stuff goes...........we did not receive a renewal for our boat last year and I still haven't got that one straightened out yet. Does anyone know about the following?; Instead of getting traditional tags for our boat trailer, we were given a tag that adheres to the tongue of the trailer. Does that mean we do not need the plate anymore? Sort of confused on that one....... ( as if I need something to confuse me)...

Not only do you not need plates anymore that was suppose to be the last fee. Let's see how long they can keep from squeezing a little more money out of us.
I got a buddy that has a fleet of kayaks. They are normally tax like a canoe unless over 19 feet then the cost is the same as a 32 foot cruiser. He has a racing kayak that is 22 feet long.

Last night I saw a sport bike on the side of the road.....with a cop.....with his lights on. I was going the opposite way when I first saw it. Then I made my stop to pick up the jerseys for my squirt hockey team and was heading back the other way. It was still there when I went back and I noticed the green tab sticker still on the bike.
I don't know what it costs as far as the ticket, but that person does! :floor:
I know one thing, the ticket is more then the tabs are!
They are really watching for the bikes and it is very easy to tell the differance between green and red.....even from a distance.

The custodians are riding their bikes to school (while mine is waiting for some parts), and one guy put his red sticker on upside down.
Sure enough, it says "90"
That's pretty funny.

Before flying to Atlanta today I stopped at my neighborhood DMV and got my stickers. I'm legal!!!.
I get home from this week's trip early Friday afternoon. Anyone up for a ride between 2-5PM?

Ritt,
Does that mean I can take my license plate off the trailer? Cool...but sounds like a sure-fire pull-over to see if the tongue has the sticker....

My tab story for this year has come to an end. Below find the final chapter.
Monday, March 28, 2005 4:54 PM
Sorry to have to tell you Ann #18 but your supervisor has failed to correct the problem. I bought my 06 stickers on March 17th 2005 at deputy #157. I would like the name of your supervisor and if this matter is not taken care of by days end tomorrow I will again take the matter up with Patricia McCormack. I do not want to be driving and have the police run my plates and have them come up saying I have not paid for the tabs I have displayed.
Thank you
Bill

Thank you for contacting Driver and Vehicle Services.
We do show that you purchased your 06 tabs on 3/17/05. They are not updated on your record yet, as the office that sold them to you had to do it as an “offline” transaction, as you went in on the same day that we corrected the record at the central office. These offline transactions then get updated by the central office when we go through that date’s work. They should have given you a receipt showing “PAID”, which is your proof that you paid for your 06 tabs. Law enforcement should not ticket you if you have the paid receipt, and the stickers displayed on the vehicle. As you are concerned about your plates being run by law enforcement, we have pulled your registration out of that date’s work and updated the record to reflect the 06 sticker. The record now shows your 06 tabs.
Sincerely,
Tami

Sparky,
I had to have a made up receipt becuase the DMV office I was at also could not complete the transaction correctly on-line. I think that DMV has some real issues with their database applications. The girl also told me to keep that receipt with me as proof of payment. Hmm...

Not only can you take it off, the instructions (at the time) were to remove and discard your plate.
The only potential problem I see is traveling in other states or countries. We had a heck of a time in Alaska, as my Mom drove a Ford Explorer and pulled a larger two-wheeled enclosed trailer, and my Dad and I rode our bikes (until my front sprocket spun out South of Alaska on the way home). As we went through Golden (British Columbia), we were stopped because we didn't have registration for the trailer.
My folks are from Wisconsin, and two-wheeled trailers simply aren't licensed there in any way. So we had a heck of a time dealing with their traffic enforcement...and after wasting 12 hours in their offices and numerous calls and later "checks" on the legality and operation of all our equipment (hmmm...) we were allowed to buy British Columbia temporary registration and to get out of there. Mind you, we were only a few miles away from the border of British Columbia at the time, and the traffic inspector stopped us as we were filling up at a gas station. Lousy wretch. On the way south, other Canadians told us this was standard and that "BC" really stood for "Bring Cash."
So, if there's no license plate, I'm not sure Canadians will accept your trailer. So maybe hold onto your plate for just that reason.
