View Full Version : Performance Air intake for my Vegas

I have gotten a set of Santa Rosa Ace pipes for my Vegas, and I have heard that you should get more air into the engine with them.
I don't think that just a stage 1 air cleaner and cover is the best way to go.
Any advice out there?

If you're interested in the do-it-yourself approach you could start by visiting Roadkill's "victech airbox" album. There are lots of pics, and some descriptive text about mods performed by two different Vic owners in there.

I keep seeing those side-air intakes on ebay...don't know if they're any better than the Stage I or not though, but worth a look.

I was told its not a good idea to do because if you run into some rain then you may get water in the carbs Have you guys heard this or is it just BS I like the look and I'm having the Santa Rosa pipes being put on to maybe call Santa Rosa people and see what they say I guess

Santa Rosa sells a performance intake, but it costs $250 or something like that. All you can see from their picture is a oval/cone shaped K&N.
I thought I would see what else is available first.

I have been using these Uni filter air Vents since 02 on my 00c (just replaced with a 99 air box). I got the idea when Lloyd installed a like filter on my 02TCD at the MITM in KC. Once installed, he ran on his dyno without any other changes. I believe I gain 3-4 horsepower with just this mod. Easy to install, just drill a 1/2 hole (I think). Here is the link, they are at the bottom of the page. http://www.unifilter.com/accessory-catalog.htm

All Victory's need more air. I opened up mine on my 99.
Lee,
does Jere have a "big air" box for the Vegas and Pins yet?

Hey Frank.....good to see you over here at the TCVR! I see you are highlighted on the VMC....I sure love your 00 V92C! You done yourself proud there! :riding:
I took a look at the stuff on Roadkills website. Lots of good info there. I think I am going to try and do that. That is probably close to what Santa Rosa V-Twin is selling but they use a larger single K&N element.
I wish I could see there set up out of the bike just to have more info on the different ways it has been done. The Uni-filter units look easy to add also so that might be the easiest option.
Did you use the ones with the blue filter element that you just drill a hole and slip them into the hole? Where did stick them in?

I just looked at the 99 air box on the victory website (99 parts manual) and that looks like what most are trying to build. That might be what Santa Rosa is selling with a K&N on it and the front half left off.
Frank, Do you run the front two pieces on your 00?
Won't that air box fit on all Vics?

I am running mine without the top and bottom pieces that cover the K&N filter. Have not had it in rain much, but would not hesitate. The parts guy at the shop I work with put the 99 set up on his 02 TCD (freedom engine). So I think they would fit any year, although I do not know about the newer style tanks. It just makes the bike look so much better IMO. I believe I lost a few poneys (seat of the pants) by putting the 99 box on. Heck, it's quick enough, not going to race it anyway. Besides, I would rather have the bike look goooddddddddd! Thanks for the comments on your other post. I did have the unifilters on the front of the airbox, and yes they were the one's you drill the hole for. No one's ever noticed that I've had one on my 02 since I installed it in 02.

I live south of you just off of Westbroadway also at 73rd (fire station) and then two blocks east.
The pipes are still in the box. I need the stock pipes on there in order to have the program downloaded and the TPS set. They have to use the stock pipes and then they must use a chip to set the diviation from stock. Since they cannot hook the exhaust sensor up to the Ace pipes. That is what is sounds like in the instuctions anyway.
So I want to iron out this air box deal and then get it all together and tuned at the same time in the spring. I might have to let the boys in Delano put-er on the dyno and tune-er up! :antsy:

After looking at Loyd's site, the Dyno says that the newer ugly air box produces more torque then the 99's air box so that might not be the way to go.
Maybe all I need is the chrome vented cover from Tri-City sports and a uni-filter added to the front of the box.

I believe the newer airboxes also have two tube type things that have something to do with the extra tourque. This is something I remeber reading on another site. I personally know little about those air boxes. I do like the looks of the 99 box IMO

That must be true about the torque, so that is why the modified air box shown on the roadkills site has the best of both worlds. They use the tubes but cut down the rest to get a 99 style fit and look with also using the tubes.
here is a photo of that

I might have to under take this project. They lay it out well on this site.

Wineo,
I would think that cutting the right side of the box would be a difficult. It's all one piece. Doing this while it's still one the bike ( can't get the thing off without pulling the engine) could be a tough job. Might be a lot easier to put 1 or 2 uni-filters in and get the same amount of air. I wish Victory would just develope a system that has the looks and performs as well as the "BOX".

I was just thinking of drilling some holes in it not cutting it and maybe trying to get the chrome vent to work on the other side somehow may work may not I hate the look but I dont want to less power either maybe do it later went the warranty runs out then change it and do some work on the motor to Thanks for the info JJ

I like the idea of drilling out the right side. Small holes and then some kind of decortive cover to make it look decent if it is no apealing. Not like a big piece of black plastic with holes would be any different then what is already there!

Well, I think I am going to take the easy route. Since I have not purchased an actual Stage I kit, I am going to buy a chromed/vented airbox cover from Tri-City Polaris. They are the only ones I know of that have a chrome vented cover.
And then I am going to add two of the Uni-filters that Frank mentioned on this thread. This seems to be the easiest way to get air without pulling the motor.
next year when I have the S&S big bore kit added, I will pull my airbox at the same time and do the conversion shown on road kills site. (unless somthing else evolves before then!)
If there are any other Airbox Ideas out there, lets keep this thread goin!

I was thinking about the airbox and the two venturis inside. I wonder if a person could have some stainles tubing bent and put one for each side extending out both sides of the bike with those cone shaped airfilters on each.

That is reasonable. I wish they had a picture so I had an idea what it would look like on, and how much work is required to get it on. I would consider cutting mine out so I would not have to remove my engine if I had something to put back in....easy!

Nortstar Custom has a high volume air box in prototype stages. The bottoms are made of aluminum and the top made of fiber. Jere doena't have any numbers yet, but it would be worth a call.

I was at Northstar's shop this afternoon and took a look at the new air intake boxes. There is an aluminum plate that sits on top of the throttle body (more on this later). The air-box area is somewhat mellon shaped, about the size of a lunchbox, and made of metal, not carbon. The front of the airbox has a collar that you cap with a K&N cone airfilter. I should have thought to take a picture. Hindsight! Oh well, I'll post a crudely drawn pic instead. Northstar Air Intake (http://www.tcvr.us/messages/attachment.php?attachmentid=330)
Jere and Rich say the new air box will bump an extra 8 HP. With the reduced size of the air box from the stock plastic briefcase, the Northstar box is hardly visible at all tucked under the gas tank. Only the "top" of the K&N lampshade is noticible without pocking your head under the tank. It also opens up the front of the bike, near the fork neck, giving the Vegas a chopper-like openess at the top front of the frame.
If you decide later on to go with a big-bore kit and open up the EFI's throttle bodies, you can either replace that aluminum plate mentioned above, or bore out larger holes in it.
I thought it was well worth the price and ordered one with the pipes he's building for me.
